Oakland, Calif. - Say this for Jawad Williams, he's certainly resilient.

On three different occasions this season, the Cavaliers have had to make a decision on whether to keep the Cleveland native on the team. Three times, he's been able to hold onto his job, keeping his long-shot season going.

The Cavs signed Williams to a second 10-day contract Friday before they took on the Golden State Warriors. After Delonte West's wrist injury a week ago, Cavs General Manager Danny Ferry and his various scouts discussed possible guard options from the NBA Development League but once again decided the wanted to keep the 6-9 rookie.

"We look at Jawad as someone who can play at the guard if we need it," Cavs coach Mike Brown said. "In the preseason, he was a small forward for us, and he has a nice post game. If we have to call his number, I won't be afraid."

Williams won the last spot on the roster out of training camp by beating out veteran Ronald Dupree, in part because fellow rookie Darnell Jackson had a wrist injury and the Cavs needed a big man in practice. In addition, some other veteran big men they were looking at, namely Austin Croshere, were picked up on waivers by other teams.

Earlier this month, the Cavs released Williams for several days to avoid guaranteeing his contract for the rest of the season as they continued to keep an eye on the waiver wire and see what else developed. Once again, after scanning the options, the team felt Williams and his versatility in practice and his strong relationship with team members, especially LeBron James, was the best fit.

Williams has played in just six games for a total of seven minutes this season. The Cavs will have to make their final decision on him after the conclusion of this 10-day deal, when he'll have to be signed for the rest of the season or released.

Threshold reached: Friday was the midpoint of the season, which means the Cavs now can formally apply for a waiver from the NBA to have Eric Snow declared medically disabled and removed from their roster and salary cap for luxury-tax purposes.

The paperwork likely will be filed next week, and there's a process that must be completed, including an independent doctor examining Snow's left knee and signing off for the league.

Snow's knee has been bothersome since he tore his meniscus before last season and had surgery. When he runs, he experiences swelling and pain. If the claim is approved, the Cavs will save roughly $11 million in actual dollars in luxury tax and insurance savings. The Cavs are hopeful to get Snow removed from the roster before next month's trade deadline, which would improve their flexibility.

Traffic trouble: Fog and rain in the Bay Area and a nasty dose of Friday afternoon traffic threw the Cavs off their routine before Friday's game. It took their team buses over an hour to reach Oracle Arena from their San Francisco hotel. The second team bus, which left 30 minutes after the first one, reached the arena first. It left Cavs trainers scrambling to get players taped and treated before tipoff.

Correction: In Wednesday's Plain Dealer, it was reported Brown is in contention to become the first All-Star coach in franchise history. It was an error. Lenny Wilkens had the honor in 1989.

Cavs at Utah Jazz

Tipoff: 9 p.m. at EnergySolutions Arena, Salt Lake City.

TV/radio: FSN Ohio; WTAM AM/1100.

Notable: The Cavs will have a rest disadvantage on the final night of their four-game trip. The Jazz was off Friday. . . . Utah is without Carlos Boozer (knee), and Andrei Kirilenko (ankle) is questionable. . . . The Cavs won the first meeting, 105-93, in Cleveland on Nov. 15. . . . The Cavs have lost the past two meetings in Salt Lake City.
