Cagers ready for season opener Tigers' strength put them in tough division Boys looking for third consecutive 20-game win year

Cagers ready for season opener Tigers' strength put them in tough division Boys looking for third consecutive 20-game win year Coming off consecutive 20-win seasons for the first time in school history, the Terra Nova boys varsity Basketball team begins their pre-season schedule with great optimism this week. They play in the Jefferson Blue and Gold Classic beginning today, Wednesday, and continuing through Friday.

Head Coach Gabe Rosenthal, in his sixth season as the varsity mentor, has an ambitious non-league schedule that he hopes will prepare his team for competition in the newly formed Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division.

For the first time PAL Basketball is split into three divisions based on strength of program, and the Bay is the toughest division. Menlo-Atherton, Burlingame, Mills, Carlmont and El Camino round out the loop.

"I'm real excited about the power league structure," Rosenthal stated. "We will be tested every night but we are really looking forward to the challenge."

After the Jeff tourney The Tigers travel to Los Gatos for another three day event. After that their schedule includes games at Gunn and West Catholic Athlete League favorite St. Francis. Terra Nova doesn't have a home game until January.

The highlight of the division schedule is a Jan. 22 game against Menlo-Atherton. It was supposed to be played here at home in The Jungle, but it is now slated for the Oracle Arena in Oakland as a preliminary to a Golden State Warriors game.

The frosh-soph will play at 1 p.m., followed by the varsity at 2:30 p.m. and the Warriors tip off at 7:30 p.m.. A ticket to the Terra Nova-Menlo Atherton game gets you into the Warriors game as well. To purchase tickets contact Rosenthal at 650-550-7657.

Terra Nova has three returning starters from last year's squad that finished second in the PAL North and second in the PAL Tournament, led by senior Ray Marshall. Marshall is an athletic player who excels driving to the basket. Also returning is sharp shooter Robin Bordon and versatile Jake Barradas.

Rosenthal will be without three players for the Jefferson tourney that will be playing for a Central Coast Section football title this Saturday. Barradas Josh Cruz and Chris Forbes will see their first Basketball action next week. Key players that will play this week include seniors Victor Chang and Karam Davy.

Terra Nova has a new frosh-soph mentor in the person of Rick Rodela, who last year was the varsity girls coach at Oceana. He has a talented and experienced squad that features 11 sophomores. The young Tigers play at home tonight, Wednesday, at 7 p.m. against Lowell and on Friday they travel across town to face Oceana at 5 p.m.

The varsity boys prepared for their first game by playing the annual Alumni game last Wednesday and scrimmaging Capuchino on Saturday. The short handed Tigers lost to the Alumni.
