CATCHING UP WITH... Jamaal Wilkes
Jamaal Wilkes is a man of many accomplishments.

He was on two NCAA-title-winning teams with UCLA in the early 1970s. He was a member of four NBA-title-winning teams, with the Warriors in 1975 and three with the Lakers in the 1980s. He owns Jamaal Wilkes Financial Advisors.

Ask him to rank his greatest accomplishment and he'll quickly answer: his family.

Wilkes, 56, and his wife Valerie live in the Los Angeles area and have three grown children: daughter Sabreen, who was a volleyball player at her dad's alma mater, and sons Omar and Jordan, who each played Basketball at Cal.

"I always tried to let it be their thing," Jamaal said of his sons' Basketball careers.

Trying to keep his distance didn't prevent the elder Wilkes from enjoying watching Omar and Jordan play.

Said Jamaal: "I can't describe the feeling as a dad, and I think ... win, lose or draw, I loved every second of it."

The Warriors' 1975 championship remains special to Wilkes. He ranks that title behind his family and his first title with UCLA on his list of accomplishments.

Somewhere on that list would be the rookie of the year award that Wilkes then known as Keith Wilkes won in 1975 after averaging 14.2 points per game. Not bad for a slender, 6-foot-6 forward who many people believed could not handle the rigors of the NBA.

Not many people believed the Warriors would win the title, either. Wilkes admitted that if someone told him in October 1974 that the Warriors would celebrate a championship in May 1975, "I'm sure I would have laughed - or, at the very least, giggled. ...

"We didn't have the heavy-duty expectations that a lot of great teams have - and I think that was one of the great teams in the NBA."

Sabreen and Omar Wilkes are aspiring actors, and their father can give them some insight into the acting profession. In the 1975 Basketball movie "Cornbread, Earl and Me," Jamaal had the role of Cornbread.

"I don't know if I would call that acting," he said with a laugh.
