The Jamal Crawford era began with a clank Tuesday night. The Warriors' worry after the game: Would it be contagious?
Debuting as a Warrior after being acquired from the Knicks last week, Crawford came out firing -- no surprise there -- in a 124-100 blowout loss to the Wizards. In fact, 10 shots in 29 minutes is a reasonable number for a shooting guard in Don Nelson's offense. And truth be told: 40 percent accuracy (4-for-10) isn't terrible.
But the troubling part of Crawford's night was that not only did he miss four of his five 3-point attempts, his teammates were off target as well, combining to go 5-for-15. That's 6-for-20, matching the 18 points the Wizards tallied from beyond the arc while taking five fewer shots.
The Warriors often determined their own fate last season from behind the 3-point line. They ranked among the league leaders both in makes and misses, a hot-and-cold ride that produced just the ninth-best record in the Western Conference.
With no-conscience Baron Davis having departed for the Clippers this summer, the Warriors got away from 3-point shooting early in the season. They hadn't attempted as many as 20 3's since the seventh night of the season.
Not coincidentally, they'd done OK (4-5) over that stretch.
But then they fired up 20 and lost by 24 to the Wizards. Coincidence? Probably not.
The Warriors have yet to win a game this season in which they attempted 20 or more 3's.
With Crawford's long-range game having been added to the show, you can assume they're going to get many, many more opportunities to snap that streak.
WIZARDS 124, WARRIORS 100: The Warriors were full of excuses while opening 5-8. Monta Ellis had yet to play, Corey Maggette and Kelenna Azubuike had stints in the trainer's room and Al Harrington decided he no longer wanted to be a part of the Don Nelson product. But Tuesday night, there were no excuses. Sure, Ellis missed a 14th consecutive game, but that was offset by Gilbert Arenas' absence from the Washington attack. And everyone else was onboard for the Warriors, including a replacement for Harrington -- trade acquisition Jamal Crawford. He was held to nine points in 29 minutes as the Warriors, without an excuse, suffered their most humiliating defeat of the young season.
