Golden State Warriors Getting Inside 2009-02-12

Golden State Warriors Getting Inside 2009-02-12
The last time the Warriors had a top-flight power forward, a rookie named Chris Webber led the club to a 50-win season in 1993-94.

Webber forced a trade the following season, and the Warriors have searched high and low for a replacement ever since.

They've traded for power forwards, signed a few, even drafted one with a lottery pick last June. They were so desperate, they even brought back Webber 14 years later, hoping to rekindle the flame.

Nothing has worked.

But now opportunity is knocking like never before. As the trade deadline approaches, teams are dangling power forwards. Good ones, too.

The Suns reportedly are taking offers on Amare Stoudemire. The Raptors are said to be accepting calls on Chris Bosh. It's possible the Jazz, fearing it's going to lose Carlos Boozer to an opt-out clause this summer, could be talked into moving their frontcourt star.

What would it take to get one of those guys? Obviously, a lot.

But surprisingly for an 18-35 team, the Warriors have a lot to offer.

They have a dynamic young point guard (Monta Ellis). They have a couple of young power forwards who might develop into starters someday (Brandan Wright, Anthony Randolph). They have a playoff-tested big man (Ronny Turiaf). And they almost assuredly have a 2009 lottery pick.

With Shaquille O'Neal anchored in the middle, would Phoenix take Ellis, Wright, Turiaf and the pick for Stoudemire?

Looking for a fresh start, would Toronto accept Ellis, Randolph and the pick for Bosh?

The Warriors might be out of the playoff race, but if they choose, they could be a real player between now and the Feb. 19 deadline. Stay tuned.

WARRIORS 144, KNICKS 127: Warriors fans have a new favorite team. It's the Knicks. A near-sellout of 19,098 thoroughly enjoyed New York's once-a-year visit Tuesday, cheering the Warriors' season-high point total and booing recently traded Al Harrington every time he touched the ball. Harrington had a decent game (24 points), but neither he nor any other Knick offered much defensive resistance as the Warriors put eight players in double-figures in the 48-minute fireworks show that had the crowd entertained throughout.
