Golden State Warriors Notes, Quotes 2008-10-05
--G Monta Ellis arrived in Oakland on the third day of camp but refused to answer questions about the offseason accident in his hometown of Jackson, Miss., that resulted in ankle surgery. He will miss the entire preseason, almost assuredly the entire month of November and quite possibly all of December as well. Ellis' agent, Jeff Fried, was scheduled to meet with Warriors management to discuss possible disciplinary actions because the injury was the result of riding a moped, which is prohibited in the fourth-year player's contract. Ellis signed a six-year, $66 million contract over the summer.

--Coach Don Nelson made it clear from the get-go: Even with Ellis out of the lineup, the Warriors will play full-speed-ahead basketball.

"Everything we do is anticipating that Monta would be in the lineup," he said. "(The other point guards) have to do Monta's job -- they just have to do it differently. It's not that they're not good players. They don't have the ability to score like he does, but they do other things maybe a little better -- pass, maybe defend on occasions."

--In hopes of being more than a designated 3-point shooter and defense-stretcher this season, veteran F Al Harrington lost some weight in the offseason and came to camp prepared to play more minutes on a nightly basis.

"I'm much quicker, and I redefined a lot of my game, my post-ups," he said. "I realized the older I get in the NBA, I have to get lighter. I'm going to try to play at a lower weight. I can play a little bit of everything. If the team needs me to bring the ball up, I can."

--Don Nelson, on offensive-minded swingman Corey Maggette: "He's not a poor defender. He's like most pros. It's there. You've just got to get it out."

--The Warriors opened camp with 18 players, including late sign-up F Justin Williams, then added a 19th when they signed veteran PG Dan Dickau to a partially guaranteed contract on the fifth day of workouts.

--The Warriors opened training camp at their practice facility in downtown Oakland on Sept. 27.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I'm still going to be the fastest guy in the NBA with the basketball after all this." -- Warriors PG Monta Ellis, vowing to make a full recovery from offseason ankle surgery.
