Golden State Warriors Notes, Quotes 2009-10-19

Golden State Warriors Notes, Quotes 2009-10-19--Circle this date on your NBA calendar: Saturday, Nov. 28. It's the Warriors' first meeting of the regular season with the Lakers, the first Stephen Jackson-Kobe Bryant rematch after their head-to-head in Los Angeles on Oct. 9, a game in which Jackson was whistled for five fouls and a technical in fewer than 10 minutes, then barked at his teammates and coaches, claiming they hadn't come to his aid in his fight against what he deemed to be biased officiating.

Five days later, Jackson wasn't backing down from challenging Bryant.

"I'm not a fan of Kobe," he admitted after the Warriors' workout Oct. 14. "I'm not somebody who looks up to him. I feel I'm just as good as him. I might not get the publicity or notoriety he gets, but I feel like I can play with anybody in the NBA any given night."

--Here's how Jackson explained giving up his captaincy on Oct. 13:

"I don't want these young guys to try to follow me. I can't be a role model to guys who make the same amount of money as me. I think everybody is responsible for themselves, and that's how it should be... Being a captain was overrated to me, anyway. You didn't do anything but go at the beginning to talk to the refs, and I didn't want to do that. Being a captain is overrated."

--Remember when Monta Ellis was saying he didn't think the Warriors could win if he and Stephen Curry, a pair of smallish guards, played together? Less than a week into preseason games, Warriors coach Don Nelson had learned to clearly disagree.

Asked if he would consider starting his rookie alongside Ellis, Nelson told the media, "I think I'm going to, because the kid is so good, leave that spot open and it will be a matchup thing. We're going to have a small backcourt anyway. We might as well start that way sometimes."

--The Warriors exercised contract options on 2007 and 2008 first-round picks Brandan Wright and Anthony Randolph on Oct. 14, guaranteeing their deals through the 2010-11 seasons.

MAIN REASON WARRIORS CAN WIN: Stephen Jackson convinces himself the most direct path out of Oakland is through the All-Star Game and lives up to his statement of being as good as Kobe Bryant. Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry mesh into an unstoppably quick backcourt. Anthony Randolph earns NBA Most Improved honors. The Rockets and Suns slump below .500, allowing a 42-win team to sneak into the Western playoffs.

MAIN REASON WARRIORS CAN LOSE: Jackson not only isn't Bryant, but isn't close to being an All-Star. Heck, following numerous suspensions, he isn't even a Warrior by midseason. Neither Ellis nor Curry can defend anyone. Randolph gets hurt at a position that's already without injured Brandan Wright. Don Nelson resigns even before breaking Lenny Wilkens' record, allowing his buddy to retain the honor.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "You can't take anything away from him. He can shoot, pass, defend, all of that. He's got the whole package. He's better than I thought he was." -- Monta Ellis, admitting to AOL Fanhouse that he's mighty impressed with new teammate Stephen Curry.
