--With Stephen Jackson wanting to be traded and Don Nelson perhaps heading into his final season as coach, Warriors management decided to get general manager Larry Riley a little help in charting a future path for the organization. So, Calbert Cheaney has been hired to serve as Riley's right-hand man.
The ex-Warrior will fill the role held by Mitch Richmond during Chris Mullin's run as general manager. Technically, his title will be "special assistant." "I'm just happy and glad to be back in there," Cheaney told the San Francisco Chronicle, admitting he also considered returning to coach college or high school ball. "My time with the team was great. The Bay Area is a great place to live. I'm going to do whatever I can to help."
--Warriors fans have been waiting all summer for the addition of a big man, and they finally got it Sept. 2 when the club announced the signing of free-agent Mikki Moore. The 33-year-old center, an 11-year NBA veteran, played in 70 games for the Kings and Celtics last season. He averaged 3.9 points and 3.7 per game.
"My role is to kind of mold some of the younger guys into being defensive-minded," the 7-footer told the San Francisco Chronicle. "I'm, by far, the oldest guy on the team, and I don't have a problem with that. I have to lead by example and show a certain work ethic every day."
--In a sign of the times, the Warriors will never leave the state of California during their eight-game preseason schedule. They will play two home games at Oracle Arena in Oakland -- Oct. 4 against the Clippers and Oct. 22 against the Hornets.
