Golden State Warriors Roster Report 2008-10-24

Golden State Warriors Roster Report 2008-10-24
ANALYZING STARTERS:

G C.J. Watson did surprisingly well as Baron Davis' chief backup last season. He earned 18 or more minutes of playing time in nine games, shooting 47.5 percent in those games and averaging 8.4 points. However, he dished out only 18 assists in those nine games and must concentrate more on distributing the ball in order to retain his starting spot over Marcus Williams, Dan Dickau and DeMarcus Nelson.

G Corey Maggette was the Warriors' counterpunch when the Clippers signed Davis away early in the free-agent period. While he might struggle defending the many quality shooting guards in the West, his three-point shooting (38.4 percent last season) is a potentially explosive addition to a team that annually ranks among the league leaders in attempts from beyond the arc.

F Stephen Jackson figures to play a lot more at small forward and even at shooting guard this season than he did in his first year-and-a-half with the previously size-challenged club. That's critical in that he could take some of the tough defensive assignments away from Maggette. Jackson is signed for two more years, but enters the season hoping to get a long-term extension.

F Al Harrington hopes to be used like a classic power forward this season after having become a glorified three-point specialist and defense-extender last year. Not a strong defensive player, Harrington should benefit from the addition of Ronny Turiaf, who figures to get the more challenging defensive matchup when they play in tandem.

C Andris Biedrins nearly averaged a double-double (10.5 points, 9.8 rebounds) last season. The left-hander will have more company around the hoop this season with the Warriors having acquired Turiaf and drafted Anthony Randolph. The days of having to play 40-plus minutes as the club's lone legitimate big man appear to be over.

ANALYZING KEY RESERVES:

G Marcus Williams was unable to win the Warriors' vacant point-guard spot in training camp and has been quickly identified as a key contributor off the bench.

G Dan Dickau was brought in after Watson and Williams failed to impress early in camp. If he can contribute anything close to the 5.2 assists a game he provided the Hornets four years ago, chances are he won't be a backup for long.

G Kelenna Azubuike carved such a surprisingly useful niche last season, the club went out and acquired an upgraded facsimile (Maggette) in free agency.

F Anthony Randolph made an immediate impression in summer league. More of a runner than a banger as a power forward, he'll be counted upon to produce as a rookie.

F Ronny Turiaf, an energetic interior force, may wind up starting as often as he comes off the bench.

MEDICAL WATCH:

G Monta Ellis (ankle surgery) is expected to return to basketball-related activities in December with a possible return later that month or in January. His 30-game suspension ends Dec. 17.
