DRAFT PICKS:
Anthony Randolph, F, 6-10, LSU -- The slender forward will have to be more perimeter-oriented in the NBA than he was in college. Some see him as another Rashard Lewis; others say Jonathan Bender. Richard Hendrix, F, 6-9, Alabama -- The Southeastern Conference's leading rebounder becomes the club's toughest interior force from the first moment he steps onto the court.
BIGGEST NEEDS: In order to build upon the momentum of a 48-win season, the Warriors must re-sign young free agents Monta Ellis and Andris Biedrins. Both are restricted free agents.
FREE AGENT FOCUS: The Warriors entered the offseason with a remarkable 10 free agents, and Baron Davis' surprising opt-out and departure to the Clippers made it 11. The other 10: Ellis, Biedrins, Mickael Pietrus, Matt Barnes, Patrick O'Bryant, Kosta Perovic, Austin Croshere, Troy Hudson, Kelenna Azubuike and C.J. Watson. Retaining Ellis and Biedrins are Priorities 1 and 1A.
PLAYER NOTES:
--It's early, but Anthony Randolph, the first-round pick out of LSU is dazzling Warriors coaches in workouts this summer. He has outplayed one-year veteran Brandan Wright, which is significant in that they have similar builds and figure to battle for playing time next season. Randolph signed his contract July 15.
--The Warriors entered summer league with Brandan Wright penciled in to be their starting power forward next season. Given how impressive Randolph was as the team prepared for its summer slate, there's no guarantee the Warriors won't take an eraser to that projection by the start of training camp.
--No doubt, the big loser in the Ronny Turiaf signing, if it goes through, will be Richard Hendrix. The Alabama rookie may go from a possible enforcer off the bench to a third-stringer who might have to scrap to avoid a season in the NBA Developmental League.
