DRAFT PICKS:
Anthony Randolph, F, 6-10, LSU -- The slender forward will have to be more perimeter-oriented in the NBA than he was in college. Some see him as another Rashard Lewis; others say Jonathan Bender. Richard Hendrix, F, 6-9, Alabama -- The Southeastern Conference's leading rebounder becomes the club's toughest interior force from the first moment he steps onto the court.
FREE-AGENT FOCUS: The Warriors entered the off-season with a remarkable 10 free agents: Ellis, Biedrins, Mickael Pietrus, Matt Barnes, Patrick O'Bryant, Kosta Perovic, Austin Croshere, Troy Hudson, Kelenna Azubuike and C.J. Watson. After they lost Pietrus, Barnes and O'Bryant, re-signing Ellis and Biedrins were the top priorities -- and both were accomplished.
PLAYER NOTES:
--C.J. Watson went to Las Vegas with hopes of convincing the Warriors he's worth a second look in 2008-09, and he performed well enough (18.8 points and 4.8 assists per game) to warrant consideration. But the signing of free agent Marcus Williams took away a valuable roster spot, and the Warriors were faced with an early decision (July 25) on whether to guarantee part of Watson's contract.
--Anthony Morrow was the surprise of the Las Vegas summer league as far as the Warriors were concerned. The swingman was so good (14.3 points per game on 70.8-percent shooting), he got an invitation to stick with the team in the Salt Lake City summer league. Morrow was Georgia Tech's leading scorer last season.
--Anthony Randolph outplayed 2007 first-rounder Brandan Wright in Las Vegas, giving him a leg up not only in bench position for 2008-09 but also as a possible starter at power forward. The LSU product led the Warriors with a 20.8 scoring average, while also finding time for 7.8 rebounds a game.
