Jackson fined for comments

Jackson fined for commentsThe Warriors have adopted a warm-and-cuddly approach to Stephen Jackson since he demanded a trade last month, but the NBA isn't playing so nice.

The league fined Jackson $25,000 on Tuesday for public statements "detrimental to the NBA." Players aren't permitted to make trade requests publicly, and Jackson is the first player fined for such statements since Ron Artest, then of the Indiana Pacers, during the 2005-06 season.

Players are allowed to and have, on occasion, requested a trade through their teams' hierarchy. The players, however, are not allowed to make said mandates through the media.

"It's against league rules to request a trade publicly," vice president of NBA communications Tim Frank said. "Therefore, a fine was issued."

Speaking at a promotional event Aug. 28, Jackson told an audience that he didn't think he'd be with the Warriors this season. He later told Dime magazine that he wanted to go to Cleveland, one of the Texas teams or New York.

"It's not about a decision I made," Jackson "It's just things are in the air right now. I really can't get too much into it right now, but I'm just looking to go somewhere where I can go and win a championship."

Coach Don Nelson texted ESPN in assurance that Jackson is still his team's captain.

General manager Larry Riley released a statement: "Stephen Jackson has been a true professional since arriving here three seasons ago, and our expectations of him have not changed despite his recent comments," Riley said. "As far as his remarks on playing for a championship ... that's not the first time we've heard it because that's the goal that he sets for himself and his teammates every season.

"That's the type of confidence that he exudes as a player and the reason that he has endeared himself to our fans.

"That's who Stephen Jackson is."

Briefly: The Warriors have secured two training-camp invitees in St. Mary's forward Diamon Simpson and Illinois center Shaun Pruitt. The Warriors have 15 players in camp with guaranteed contracts, so making the roster is a long shot for both invitees. ... Cartier Martin, the non-roster star of the Las Vegas Summer League, has signed with Benetton Treviso of the Italian League.
