Morrow aiming at two All-Star targets

Morrow aiming at two All-Star targets
OAKLAND O.J. Mayo probably will be on the team, along with fellow lottery picks Derrick Rose, Michael Beasley and Russell Westbrook.

So can a undrafted free agent crash the party?

While talk of Anthony Morrow's inclusion in the Three-Point Shootout during the NBA's All-Star weekend Feb. 13-15 in Phoenix has gained traction of late, Warriors coach Don Nelson says Morrow also should be considered for the Rookie Challenge, where first-year players take on NBA sophomores.

Morrow's 3-point shooting percentage of .506 (40-of-79) leads the NBA by a healthy margin, and the Georgia Tech product also is in the top 20 among rookies in scoring (9.1) and rebounding (3.1) per game.

"He is leading the league in 3-point shooting and he is having an awful good year for a rookie," Nelson said Monday. "Especially when you (media) guys say I don't play rookies. So he must be unbelievable."

Morrow ranks 12th among first-year players in points per game, despite being 17th in minutes played (20.3). He is also ninth among rookies in overall field goal percentage (.475) and is 18th in rebounding.

The rookie and sophomore teams are each composed of nine players four backcourt players, four frontcourt players and one wild card. Assistant coaches choose the participants, with each team sending in one ballot. Coaches cannot vote for their own players. Results will be publicized late next week.

"It would be huge (to be a part of All-Star weekend)," Morrow said. "I've watched that (rookie/sophomore) game ever since I was in middle school. It would be an honor to play in it, and I hope I make it. I understand there are a lot of good rookies out there right now. If not, it's all good."

Jason Richardson in 2002 was the last Warriors rookie to participate in the Rookie Challenge. Troy Murphy and Gilbert Arenas (2003), Mike Dunleavy (2004) and Monta Ellis (2007) all played in the game as sophomores.

"I enjoyed every minute," Ellis said. "Just being with the guys that went in the first round and were lottery picks, and me going in the second round, it was fun to be around those guys. Like Chris Paul and (Deron Williams), it was a great experience for me, and I want the same thing for (Morrow)."

Morrow has hit 40 of his past 69 field goal attempts and 17 of his past 26 3-point attempts over the past 10 games. Wanting to be known as more than just a gunner, though, Morrow has averaged 3.3 rebounds in that same span and picked up a season-high four assists during Sunday's 107-92 win over the Los Angeles Clippers.

"I'm not a streak shooter, because I work hard and I try to be as consistent as I can," Morrow said. "(But like) any shooter, you (make) the first two and you feel like you can make the next five or six in a row."

Notes: Jamal Crawford (left hamstring contusion) practiced lightly on Monday and is listed as questionable for Wednesday's game at Dallas. Nelson said he'll have a better idea of Crawford's availability today. ... Corey Maggette (sore back) and Andris Biedrins did not practice.
