Rockets ride wave in second half to win Scola's 14 points in 3rd quarter fuel rally past Warriors ROCKETS: Late Golden State runRockets update

Wednesday: Rockets 108, Warriors 107.

Record: 1-1.

Saturday: Portland at Toyota Center, 7:30 p.m.

TV/radio: FSH; 610 AM and in Spanish on 850 AM.

OAKLAND, Calif. - The difference was clear. So is the change that is needed.

From now on, all water transportation. Cruise ships and sail boats, yachts and submarines. If the Rockets have to take canoes down the bayous, they should do it.

With the Bay Bridge closed, they took the step unprecedented in the NBA world of luxury planes, trains and automobiles of taking the ferry across the San Francisco Bay on Wednesday, and though there was nothing like smooth sailing, the Rockets took over the second half and held on to beat the Golden State Warriors 108-107 for their first win of the season.

Trevor Ariza led the Rockets with 25 points, one shy of his career high, with Aaron Brooks getting a career-best 12 assists. Luis Scola chipped in 21 points - 14 in a third-quarter surge that the Rockets rode to the win.

The Warriors had a 10-point lead at halftime, but the Rockets rallied with a stunning 35-point third quarter. Scola's scoring spree included the first 3-pointer (in seven attempts) of his career. Brooks had 11 points and five assists during the period. The Rockets shot 71.4 percent - 80 percent from beyond the arc - to replace the Warriors' 10-point lead with one of their own.

More significant, however, was the ability to answer the Warriors' runs. Golden State cut the lead to six heading into the fourth quarter, but Chase Budinger scored eight quick points to push the lead back to double figures.

The Warriors closed to within four, but Ariza hit a 3, and Carl Landry pumped in 10 points as the lead went back to nine.

The Rockets , however, could not quite close it out. Leading by nine with four minutes left, they started missing open shots. Budinger missed two 3s. Brooks and Scola missed jumpers. Scola did hit from 20 feet with 2:40 remaining, but consecutive baskets by rookie Stephen Curry cut the lead to 108-103 with 1:47 remaining.

Scola missed a pair of free throws with 1:34 left. Brooks had a 3-pointer rim out. Shane Battier missed a rushed-up runner with 36.9 seconds left to beat the shot clock.

Curry finally cut the lead to three with a layup, but by then, there were just 29.1 seconds remaining. Brooks let the shot clock run down until there were 4 seconds remaining and then made his move, collided with Curry and was called for traveling with 6.6 seconds remaining.

The Warriors worked the ball to Anthony Morrow, the NBA's most accurate 3-point shooter last season, but his long-range attempt missed, making Curry's layup at the buzzer meaningless.
