Stanford star a finalist for national soccer player of the year

Stanford star a finalist for national soccer player of the year Stanford senior Kelley O'Hara has been named a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, college soccer's highest honor. She is the first Cardinal player to earn the honor since Julie Foudy in 1992. UCLA forward Lauren Cheney and North Carolina midfielder Tobin Heath are the other finalists who will join O'Hara in St. Louis for the award ceremony Jan. 8. O'Hara led the nation in goals (26) and points (65) shattering school season records in both categories and had 13 assists, Stanford's third-highest season total, all while leading the Cardinal to its best-ever record (25-1) and first NCAA final.

Nabokov great but Sharks still lose to Stars

SAN JOSE Matt Niskanen scored in the 11th round of the shootout and the Dallas Stars overcame a stellar performance by San Jose goalie Evgeni Nabokov to hand the Sharks their fourth straight loss 3-2. Nabokov's 42 saves were his most in a game in six years. He also saved 42 shots in a 2-2 tie against Edmonton on Dec. 11, 2003. But it wasn't enough to prevent the Sharks from losing their fourth straight, all on home ice. The skid is the longest at home for the Sharks since losing five in a row in 2007-08. The only solace for San Jose is three of the games went to overtime, giving them five points on a five-game homestand.

Ellis misses, Warriors fall to Bulls in overtime

CHICAGO Coming out of a timeout, the Golden State Warriors had the ball with 24.7 seconds remaining, tied at 87 with the Chicago Bulls. Anyone who's been following the Warriors this season knew which play was coming. So, as usual, guard Monta Ellis was isolated at the top, dribbling down the final seconds of the shot clock. He penetrated against a waiting defense and put up a contested shot. He air-balled a floater, sending the game into overtime. The Warriors wound up losing 96-91 in overtime. But Ellis' misfire on a potential game-winner was emblematic of the Warriors' struggles to close out games. Golden State is 0-4 in games decided by five points or fewer.

Santa Clara rallies past Div. II Dominican

SANTA CLARA Marc Trasolini scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Santa Clara came from behind to defeat Dominican 69-65. Robert Smith added 16 points for the Broncos (5-4). The Broncos last week gave undefeated UNLV, now ranked No. 18, a scare before falling 66-63. But they trailed 37-32 at halftime Friday against a Div. II team and by as many as 10 points in the opening half before rallying to take a 62-52 lead with 5:28 left to play.

Broncos drop heartbreaker to CSU Bakersfield

SANTA CLARA Santa Clara's Lena Gipson had 14 points and 20 rebounds and Santa Clara freshman guard Meagan Fulps scored a team-best 20 points, but the Broncos blew a nine-point lead and lost 78-76 to visiting Cal State Bakersfield. SCU senior Maggie Goldenberger made a jump shot from the top of the key with 18 seconds remaining to tie it at 76.
