Warriors' Biedrins hurt in loss to Phoenix

Warriors' Biedrins hurt in loss to Phoenix
A road loss to the Suns was secondary Friday night.

Of greater concern is the health of starting center Andris Biedrins, who sprained his right ankle on the final play of the third quarter of the Warriors' 115-105 defeat.

Biedrins came down on Stephen Jackson's foot underneath the basket and immediately crumpled to the floor in pain. The team's iron man in recent years, Biedrins did not attempt to put any pressure on his right foot as he was helped off the court by Rob Kurz and Jermareo Davidson.

X-rays taken after the game were negative, and Biedrins will be re-evaluated back in Oakland. The injury overshadowed a gutsy effort in Phoenix as the Suns and Warriors wrapped up a home-and-away set on national TV after Golden State blew out the Suns in Oakland on Wednesday.

Phoenix figured to shoot better at home and the Warriors worse on the road, and so it was that Suns fired in 50 percent of their attempts while Golden State shot 45.3 percent as ball movement gave way to isolation plays.

If there was any doubt whether Suns coach Terry Porter would try to get the ball to Amare Stoudemire after failing to exploit a mismatch against Kelenna Azubuike in Oakland, they were removed when Shaquille O'Neal picked up two fouls in the first 61 seconds of the game.

Free to roam in the paint with O'Neal sitting, Stoudemire scored nine of his 19 points in the first quarter as Phoenix ran out to an 11-2 lead. The Warriors opened by missing three of their first four shots and turning the ball over four times.

Golden State trailed by as many as 13 in a reversal of Wednesday's match, but instead of folding like the Suns did, the Warriors chipped away in the second quarter before blitzing Phoenix to start the second half.

Coach Don Nelson went with both Biedrins and Ronny Turiaf to open the third quarter, and the result was a 9-0 run that gave the Warriors their first lead of the night. Monta Ellis had a pair of baskets and Biedrins followed with a three-point play and layup to put Golden State up 63-59 with 9:46 left.

A back-and-forth affair ensued, until Biedrins went down in the final seconds of the third quarter. Golden State was down 86-85 at the time, and the Suns pushed their lead back up to 10 points before the Warriors rallied again.

Turiaf's jumper made it 105-103 with about four minutes left in the game, but Golden State could get no closer.

Stephen Jackson had 24 points and six assists to follow up his first career triple-double, while Corey Maggette and Turiaf combined for 36 points and 14 rebounds off the bench. Biedrins had a double-double 11 points, 11 rebounds before leaving.

Grant Hill led the Suns with 27 points and Jason Richardson added 25. Stoudemire added 14 rebounds to his scoring total for a double-double.

Few seemed happy with the officiating. Nelson and Jackson both picked up technical fouls, as did Suns players Hill and Louis Amundson.

For Jackson, the price could be steep: It was his 14th technical of the season, 13 of which count toward the league limit of 16 before one-game suspensions begin to be issued.
