There's no telling how successful the Golden State Warriors would be if Monta Ellis was around for a full season.
The surging Warriors will again be forced to play without Ellis for an extended period of time, starting Monday night as they try for a sixth straight victory over the host Los Angeles Clippers.Coming off a 133-120 victory over Oklahoma City on Saturday, Golden State (20-36) learned Ellis will rest his surgically repaired left ankle for at least one week and go back into advanced rehabilitation for up to two weeks.
After averaging a career-high 20.2 points last season and signing a six-year, $66 million contract extension, Ellis was injured in a motorized scooter accident during the summer. Projected to be the centerpiece of a Warriors team that went 48-34 last season and narrowly missed the playoffs, Ellis endured a lengthy recovery and was suspended 30 games by the team for the incident.
Golden State went 13-30 before Ellis made his season debut Jan. 23. He's averaging 13.4 points in 13 games, but is not playing at the same level he did in 2007-08.
The Warriors are 13 games out of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, but are coming off a 4-1 homestand where the lone loss came 129-121 to the Los Angeles Lakers.
On Saturday, Stephen Jackson scored 26 points and Corey Maggette added 25 as the Warriors posted their fourth 120-point game of the month while helping coach Don Nelson earn his 1,300th victory.
Maggette, who signed with Golden State in July after eight seasons with the Clippers, is averaging 20.0 points. Adjusting to his reserve role, Maggette has scored 24 or more in each of his last three games.
"When I come off the bench, I'm just trying to be as aggressive as possible," said Maggette, who is averaging 18.5 points in two games against the Clippers this season.
Golden State is 5-23 on the road and looking to avoid a third straight loss away from home.
"We need to get back on a winning streak," said Jackson, who's averaging 20.7 points. "Hopefully we can get another win against the Clippers come Monday."
Golden State's last loss versus the Clippers came 120-114 at Los Angeles on Nov. 2, 2007. The Warriors are looking for their third straight road win in the series.
Los Angeles tries to avoid a fourth straight loss after falling 116-87 at Portland on Sunday. The Clippers are giving up an average of 132 points in their last three contests.
"We just got dominated out there," said guard Baron Davis, who is averaging 15.3 points in his first season with Los Angeles after spending the last three with Golden State.
A bruised tailbone kept Davis out of the Clippers' 107-92 loss at Golden State on Jan. 25. He had 25 points and 11 assists in a 121-103 home loss to the Warriors on Nov. 15.
Eric Gordon had 21 points and fellow rookie DeAndre Jordan added 15 and 12 rebounds Sunday for the Clippers, who played without Al Thornton (sore foot) and Zach Randolph.
Randolph (21.9 ppg) is expected to return after serving a two-game suspension for punching Phoenix' Louis Amundson on Tuesday. Thornton's return is uncertain.
